The Board of Directors and staff of Beckwith Electric are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our Board members, Gabriel "Gabe" Cazares. We extend deepest sympathy to his family.

Largo, FL - October 9, 2006 - Former Clearwater Mayor Gabe Cazares, a civil rights advocate and champion of the disadvantaged, passed away Friday September 29, 2006. He was 86. Gabe was elected to the Beckwith Electric Board of Directors in 1990. Gabe is known both locally and nationally for his commitment to people. Locally, Gabe was mayor of Clearwater, Florida from 1975 to 1978 and a Pinellas County Commissioner from 1980 to 1984. In 1990, he was elected County Chairman of the Democratic Party and to the National Board of Common Cause.

Gabe's list of awards and appointments is impressive, even for a lifetime of involvement. He served on the Florida Commission of Human Relations, the Florida Commission on Hispanic Affairs, the Governor's Advisory Council on Farm Workers and the Florida Educational Standards Commission. He also served on the Tampa Bay Regional Council Metropolitan Planning Organization and area agencies on aging. He was also a founding member of Habitat for Humanity and former president of the Clearwater Free Clinic.

As a civil rights activist, Gabe was awarded a Trailblazer Award by the Florida State Association of Community Relations Professionals, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Organization of Women, an achievement award from the NAACP Florida State Conference, and an advocacy award from the National Association of Human Rights Workers.

Gabe was born on Jan. 31, 1920 in Alpine, Texas, one of nine children, and reared in Los Angeles, where he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Gabe received a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Texas Christian University and a Masters in Business Administration from Jackson College in Hawaii. He has been an Account Executive with Dean Witter Reynolds, Merrill Lynch, and Smith Barney. He was in service in Europe and the Pacific in WWII, Korean and Vietnam wars where he served in personnel and management. He retired as USAF Regular Lt. Colonel with an Air Force Commendation Medal from the Commander of the Electronics Systems Division.

Mr. Cazares is survived by his brother, Arturo Cazares; nieces Gloria Romero, Lee Jennings, Cynthia Cruz, Tiffany McConnell, Xoch Tuck, Cookie Hotard; nephews Ed Pawlack, Greg Albino, Johnny Pawlack, Chris Cazares; godson James Steffens; goddaughter Larri Gerson; 12 great-nieces and -nephews; and 12 great-great-nephews and -nieces.
