Printed Circuit Board Design Engineer


The Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Design Engineer will design complex printed circuit board layouts with digital, analog, mixed signal, and power circuits. The PCB Design Engineer will work from schematics and descriptions of the board function, configuration, and arrangement as defined by Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Responsibilities include creating manufacturing, assembly, and PCB fabrication documentation on time to meet Beckwith Electric program requirements.

Other responsibilities will include loading of project data into document control system, attending and conducting design reviews, design rule checking, and peer design checks.


The PCB Design Engineer translates schematics and mechanical requirements into design documentation. The incumbent interprets and analyzes these requirements and prepares layouts, assembly drawings, and documentation using computer-aided design equipment.

The PCB Design Engineer will have thorough knowledge of design specifications and component mechanical tolerances as applied to printed circuit boards. Because the designs and their documentation direct manufacturing in Beckwith production, the incumbent ensures that designs are complete, accurate, and designed for manufacture.  Communicating with the teams responsible for processing the design into deliverables and assemblies is essential.

The incumbent maintains the integrity of the electrical design through a thorough understanding of component packages, ratings, power dissipation, footprints, and other pertinent information affecting designs.

The PCB Design Engineer will:

  • Interface with internal customers and vendors to coordinate design effort.
  • Assist in scheduling of assigned projects.
  • Write change orders and review changes to ensure accuracy of changes before release.
  • Add new components to component libraries, check new components added by others to libraries. Make changes to existing components and check changes made by others.
  • Possess strong writing, speaking, and organizational skills.
  • Prepare purchase requisitions for artwork.
  • Create complex BOM structures
  • Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the Company's safety and attendance policies.


5 to 10+ years of experience in PCB design of protection and control devices for the electric power industry, pursuant to all applicable IEEE, ANSI, UL, IEC, EN, CSA, CE or other international test standards, electric power industry requirements, and IPC standards.  Computer-Aided Design and Drafting Certificate are required.


  • Knowledge of electronic components, PCB fabrication, and PCB assembly processes involving high-density passive components and microprocessors, FPGAs, DDR and flash memories, and peripherals in BGA, TQFP, LQFP, and QFN chip packages.
  • Knowledge of high-speed signal routing is required.
  • Knowledge is required of the PCB design requirements imposed by IEEE, IEC and other international standards for Dielectric Withstand, Impulse Voltage, Insulation Resistance, Surge Withstand Capability, 1 MHz Oscillatory Immunity, Electrostatic Discharge Test, Radiated Field Immunity, Fast Transient Disturbance Test, Surge Immunity, and Output Contact Rating.
  • Comprehend descriptive geometric practices
  • Proficient in use of Altium Designer.  Experience with PCAD 2006 a plus.
  • Comprehend bill of material structures
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Skilled in design for manufacturability
