Director of Engineering

SUMMARY

The Director of Engineering is a senior management professional with a technical engineering background and strong project management skills. This is a key leadership role within the company with responsibility for delivering new products and sustaining existing products sold into the power industry. In this role, the individual will be responsible for all aspects of engineering including: New Product Development, Modification of Existing Designs, Sustaining Engineering, and Product Validation.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

New Product Development

The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure that the product development process from concept development through initial production launch is successfully completed from meeting product specifications, cost, objectives, product quality and schedules. In doing this, the position works with a cross functional team comprised of a senior program manager, Director of Marketing, Director of Sales, internal designers, supply chain specialists, Director of quality and quality engineer, and manufacturing team. Key component of this position is to supervise the acceleration of project plans, schedules, and communicate risk – including project status reporting. The individual will have the responsibility of overseeing the development of products from concept to market.

This role will manage the new product concept and design efforts. It requires working with internal design engineers and ensures their team is able to do the following:

  • Research and identify program needs and marketplace trends
  • Initiate and manage multiple product projects at the same time
  • Collaborate closely with the Sales and Marketing Team
  • Support the development, maintenance and ongoing improvement of an efficient and effective product development process, project management tools and techniques, and related documents.
  • Ensure that team members understand and adhere to requirements, providing assistance and training as needed
  • Monitor, track and report on project status, key performance indicators and any changes to scope using established tools – installing a master project list, dashboard reports and regular project updates with the senior program manager
  • Manage and report on project spending
  • Creation of presentations to aid in effective communication for departmental and company information and updates

The ideal candidate will take an active role in leading the engineering group which consists of hardware, software, firmware, mechanical, algorithms, and a dedicated test lab to provide solutions within the power equipment industry. This person is an essential member of the senior management team, and will play a very important role in the strategic growth and tactical execution of the company’s goals.

The Director of Engineering must have the expertise in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of product development in the area of Protective Relays and Controls for the electric power industry.
  • Familiarity with IEEE and IEC functional standards that is applicable for protective relays and controls (example IEEE C37.102, IEC 60255-151).
  • Familiarity with the product designs to meet IEEE and IEC environmental standards for temperature/humidity, hi-pot, ESD, RFI immunity and emissions, Surge Withstand and impulse (Example IEEE C37.90.1, IEC 60255-26).
  • Familiarity with electric power industry communications protocols such as MODBUS, DNP, IEC 61850.

The incumbent must be a technical visionary who has both business and technical skills, with a proven record of delivering results. They must be a master of working engineering needs and requirements in light of the overall corporate objectives and goals. This individual must be comfortable dealing with the conflicting demands of market pressure and time to market, with technical quality and completeness. The Director of Engineering must be comfortable representing technical content at all levels of the organization, as well as with customers, in a way that is easily understood.

Sustaining Engineering

The Director of Engineering will also be responsible for qualifying new components for our legacy product lines, and maintaining the hardware and software systems integrity of those products. Major responsibilities include analyzing schematics of existing designs; working with our Director of Quality in the investigation of customer reported problems through Root Cause Analysis; and supporting the Supply Chain team through multi-sourcing and qualification of alternate suppliers. This will require a hands-on approach to solving problems and providing technical support leveraging a strong experience in diagnostics and trouble shooting. This role must be able to independently research solutions and resolve complex problems by analyzing product data and historical information. It will require providing feedback on design features, reviewing legacy technical documentation and procedures, and fix or advocate for product bug fixes and features that need to be addressed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Management of the Engineering Department & Functions
    • Plan and direct all aspects of engineering activities and projects within the department functional areas of responsibility

    • Oversee and analyze technology trends, human resource needs, and market demands to organize and prioritize projects.
    • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of current and novel related technologies, including competitive and industry disruptive technologies.
    • Ensure that all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with company established policies and objectives.
    • Develop and maintain project schedules
    • Utilizes best practice engineering methods and provide expert technical guidance for engineering initiatives.
    • Manage overall engineering budget and costs.
    • Manage, enhance, and advance the company’s core technology portfolio in support of company goals and objectives.
    • Continuously identify, measure, and improve company engineering processes.
    • Maintain proper staffing levels and training to support growth of the company.
    • Manage personnel activities of engineering staff in conjunction with Human Resources.
    • Create and maintain a culture of “get it right the first time”
    • Provide progress reports for all projects and ensures timely and accurate reporting.
    • Promote, identify, and implement opportunities for continuous improvement through constant assessment of employee and process effectiveness.

    • Providing support for sustaining engineering activities of released products.
    • Conduct life cycle planning for product line(s), including enhancements and obsolescence.
  • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of all Beckwith Electric products.
  • Maintains all engineering documentation (i.e. drawings, source code, models, etc.)
  • Participate and contribute in the strategic planning process by developing long and short term objectives to achieve the company mission and vision.
  • Attend and participate in the IEEE committees meetings in the development of industry standards.
  • Write and present technical papers at conferences and trade shows to improve the company image.

Required EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. degree in Engineering, M.S in
  • Engineering or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in electronic product development environment.
  • Experience with hardware development.
  • Experience with firmware and software development.
  • Experience with DSP algorithm development.
  • Experience with mechanical design.
  • Experience with a stage gate development process.
  • Excellent design, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of high tech electronic and firmware design.
  • Excellent knowledge of design methods, verification, and validation.
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritizes tasks, and quickly adjusts in a rapidly changing environment.

Desired EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • M.S in Engineering or MBA
  • Experience within the power generation and/or distribution industry.
  • Experience with process mapping and design.
