Vice President of Engineering


We are seeking a senior management professional with engineering leadership experience in the creation of digital electronic instrumentation, encompassing both software and hardware, for market-leading product solutions. In this leadership role within the company, the incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of engineering to deliver Game-Changing New Product Development in the power producing industry, and Excellence in Product Evolution for the power electrical grid.

Game- Changing Research & Development Design

The primary responsibility of this role is to lead the entire organization through all aspects of our product development process. Utilizing product requirements and concepts refined through our Design Review Board, this position will spearhead the development of new products to meet specifications, cost objectives, product quality and schedules. The ideal individual for this position has a proven track record for launching industry-leading solutions that exceed customer expectations.

Continuing Product Design Excellence

For over 50 years, Beckwith Electric is an industry recognized leader in the power system protection and control arena. The Vice President of Engineering is responsible for overseeing evolutionary enhancements of our successful product lines used by customers worldwide. The Product Design Excellence team ensures continuing product superiority in our chosen markets. 

The above requires a hands-on approach to solving problems and providing technical solutions/guidance to ensure product deliverables are met. The candidate must be able to lead the department to independently research solutions and resolve complex problems. It will require coordination with a cross functional team that includes the VP of Operations, Director of Sales, Director of Marketing, Director of Quality, Purchasing and Finance management.  In light of company objectives, the VP of Engineering must be comfortable dealing with the conflicting demands of market pressures and time to market, ensuring technical quality and completeness.  This individual will play an important role in the strategic growth and tactical execution of the company’s overall goals and how our brand is translated in the market and industry.

In overseeing the R&D Design and Product Design Excellence groups, this role works closely with the Senior Program Manager and the department’s Directors’ to ensure their respective teams are able to do the following:

  • Research and identify program needs and marketplace trends
  • Initiate and manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Collaborate closely with the Sales and Marketing Team
  • Support the development, maintenance and ongoing improvement of an efficient and effective product development process, project management tools and techniques, and related documents.
  • Ensure that team members understand and adhere to requirements, providing assistance and training as needed
  • Monitor, track and report on project status, key performance indicators and any changes to scope using established tools – installing a master project list, dashboard reports and regular project updates with the senior program manager
  • Manage and report on project spending
  • Creation of presentations to aid in effective communication for departmental and company information and updates
  • Oversee creation and maintenance of product technical documentation.
  • Maintaining the hardware and software systems integrity
  • Completion of product documentation of their products


  • Management of the Engineering Department & Functions
    • Plan and direct all aspects of engineering activities and projects within the department functional areas of responsibility

    • Oversee and analyze technology trends, human resource needs, and market demands to organize and prioritize projects.
    • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of current and novel related technologies, including competitive and industry disruptive technologies.
    • Ensure that all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with company established policies and objectives.
    • Develop and maintain project schedules
    • Utilizes best practice engineering methods and provide expert technical guidance for engineering initiatives.
    • Manage overall engineering budget and costs.
    • Manage, enhance, and advance the company’s core technology portfolio in support of company goals and objectives.
    • Continuously identify, measure, and improve company engineering processes.
    • Maintain proper staffing levels and training to support growth of the company.
    • Manage personnel activities of engineering staff in conjunction with Human Resources.
    • Create and maintain a culture of “get it right the first time”
    • Provide progress reports for all projects and ensures timely and accurate reporting.
    • Promote, identify, and implement opportunities for continuous improvement through constant assessment of employee and process effectiveness.

    • Prioritize development activities to meet customer needs while accomplishing project objectives.
  • Modification of existing products in support of company goals and objectives.
    • Providing support for sustaining engineering activities of released products.
    • Conduct life cycle planning for product line(s), including enhancements and obsolescence.
  • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of all Beckwith Electric products.
  • Maintains all engineering documentation (i.e. drawings, source code, models, etc.)
  • Participate and contribute in the strategic planning process by developing long and short term objectives to achieve the company mission and vision.
  • Attend and participate in the IEEE committee meetings in the development of industry standards.
  • Write and present technical papers at conferences and trade shows to improve the company image.


  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, M.S in Electrical Engineering or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in electronic product development environment.
  • Experience with hardware development.
  • Experience with firmware and software development.
  • Experience with DSP algorithm development.
  • Experience with mechanical design.
  • Experience with a stage gate development process.
  • Excellent design, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of high tech electronic and firmware design.
  • Excellent knowledge of design methods, verification, and validation.
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritizes tasks, and quickly adjusts in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Team player, customer advocate, and innovative problem solver.

The VP of Engineering must have the expertise in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of product development in the area of Protective Relays and Controls for the electric power industry.
  • Familiarity with IEEE and IEC functional standards that are applicable for protective relays and controls (example IEEE C37.102, IEC 60255-151).
  • Familiarity with the product designs to meet IEEE and IEC environmental standards for temperature/humidity, hi-pot, ESD, RFI immunity and emissions, Surge Withstand and impulse (Example IEEE C37.90.1, IEC 60255-26).
  • Familiarity with electric power industry communications protocols such as MODBUS, DNP, IEC 61850.


  • M.S in Engineering or MBA
  • Experience within the electric power industry.
  • Experience with process mapping and design.
