Syncrotran® Motor Bus Transfer System
Syncrotran® System
The utility-grade Syncrotran System consists of a Transfer Logic Controller
and either a Power Transfer Relay or a High Speed Sync-Check Relay. The
system performs all of the necessary logic and control functions for motor
bus transfers in two directions by automatically selecting from either
fast, in-phase or residual voltage methods. The relays allow the Transfer
Logic Controller to supervise a fast transfer by monitoring the phase
angle between the motor bus and the new source, and blocking transfer
if the angle is excessive. If fast transfer is impossible because of excessive
angle, the Power Transfer Relay offers the option of closing the motor
bus in-phase with the new source at the very next pass through zero degrees.
Should system conditions prevent transfer by either method, the Transfer
Logic Controller contains a circuit that measures bus voltage, regardless
of the frequency, and allows a residual transfer to occur when the motor
bus voltage has decayed to a safe level.
Safeguard the Source!
The M-0236B Power Transfer Relay allows
sources with large phase angles, or motor buses with moderate to low composite
inertia, to transfer on the first phase coincidence. In that manner, shock
to the motors due to excess power transfer is avoided. If transfer near
a zero phase angle difference between your motors and the new source is
treated as unimportant, consider the fact that a 12° phase angle difference
can hard load motors with 30% of full load shock. That is stress your
rotating machinery should not endure! This is especially true for synchronous
motors where the voltage is held up to nominal during the transfer process.
- Ease-of-Use- In a world of menu-driven HMIs on relays, the
use of individual control dials for all tunable parameters offers the
commissioning engineer the greatest latitude and access to tune the
Syncrotran® System, or any of the component relays. Having all parameters
with easy-to-read, clearly marked controls is a great asset to get the
commissioning task performed properly and in a timely fashion.
- Scalable Application- If studies show that only two transfer
methods will work under all conditions, a residual voltage transfer
can be combined with either a fast (high-speed synch-check) or in-phase
(high-speed synchronizer). This creates initial cost savings.
- Meeting Utility Standards- The Syncrotran® System and any of
the constituent relays meet pertinent ANSI standards, including ANSI
C37-90.2 RFI at 35 V/M.
- Application Flexibility- The Syncrotran® System will automatically
determine the best transfer— fast, in-phase, or residual voltage to
match the conditions at the instant of transfer. Conditions such as
depressed voltage, faults, and different plant loading can all have
an effect on the motor bus inertia and voltage during the transfer process.
The Syncrotran® System possesses the high-speed measurement, decision-making
ability and speed-of-command execution for motor transfer applications.
